This bull has four fantastic calving ease bulls close up on his pedigree. First, his sire, Flint, is a bull we raised and have used on heifers for the past five years. He consistently produces moderate framed, deep bodied, stout calves. We've kept a lot of his daughters and sold a lot of his sons as bulls. Second, Flint's sire was another bull we raised named Deacon. Deacon wasnt "supposed" to be a heifer bull - he was bred to be more of a growth/performance bull, but he came out 80lbs, and he consistently passed an easy-calving, light birth weight along in his calves. Third, Flint's maternal grandsire, a bull named Wulfs Unmatched 2311U, is probably the most impressive on the pedigree. He was part of a winning pen of 3 that Wulfs showed in Denver. We didn't plan to buy him in their sale the following spring, but my grandpa couldn't sit on his hands. It turned out to be one of the most influential animals we've had in the herd. At the time, we needed to bring down our birth weights, and he did that without sacrificing anything, anywhere that I've been able to find. Unmatched's calves were nice and uniform at weaning, no matter what kind of cow raised them. He had a big ribeye, and he passed that along as well, and was always docile. We still have some semen in the tank that I'm hoarding, but when we were actively using and reporting calves by him, he was a breed leader in calving ease and birth weight traits. Finally, 120L was raised by a heifer, a daughter of another heifer bull, Wulfs Walcott. This bull is evidence that you can breed for calving ease without sacrificing growth. His EPDs rank in the top 10% of the breed for calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, and carcass fat, and top 25% for birth weight.
